Germany has this week provided an additional 50 million Euros to the United Nations Emergency Fund (UNCERF). German Foreign Office State Minister Niels Annen announced this increase in a video this week. 2020 Germany was the largest donor to the UNCERF.

I am glad to announce that Germany is providing an additional 50 million euro to the Central Emergency Response Fund.

This funding will benefit people in Yemen, Somalia, Ethiopia, and many other countries.

The CERF is an extremely fast and efficient instrument: It provides help within a few days after disaster hits.

The CERF provided help for 69 million people in 2020. Here are two examples:

  • In Bangladesh, the CERF allocated funds before heavy flooding occurred. This enabled thousands not only to find shelter, but also to save their herds, their livelihoods and their property. Germany is highly supportive of this anticipatory approach.
  • COVID-19 has, among other things, given rise to gender-based violence. At this critical moment, the CERF has made available 25 million US dollars to protect women and girls in crisis contexts.

We encourage all donors to increase their CERF funding. Only then will the CERF be what it is meant to be: a fund „by all and for all“.
