Welcoming words for the 7th Festival of German Cinema
For me personally, this is the second occasion to experience the German cinematic impetus here in China. And, indeed, in the months between the festivals, I have observed the enthusiasm with which German films are received in China.
Unforgettable was the experience to see Wim Wenders at the National Film Archive in May. Thanks again to Clemens and his team from Goethe Institute for the wonderful retrospective. We definitely want more of this!
Filmmaking is not only about stars and stripes. The cultural industry is one of the fastest growing sectors of the world economy. Germany wants to tap to this potential in the film industry.
This is why I am delighted that we have a very committed representative of “German Films” here in Beijing: Anke, with your helping hand, we - a large delegation of representatives of the German film industry and the Embassy - received a high level reception here in Beijing last October. Be aware: there is more to come!
Anke is an expert. For all those who do not know yet: Germany is an extremely attractive location for the film industry. Including television, Germany is the largest audiovisual market in Europe. My country also stands for the second-best film funding system in Europe.
I am convinced: access to the relevant funds will soon be available to Chinese producers. Negotiations on a co-production are in the final stages. And believe me: I am pushing my colleagues in Berlin hard to get it done for the Berlinale next year!
For this year though: tonight’s evening – on the same stage together with WANG Jingchun !!! - and the coming 2 weeks are the cinematic highlight of my year. Enjoy with me, enjoy with us!
